Will Park Chan-ho (KIA Tigers), who is preparing for the season calmly, show further growth this year.
Park Chan-ho, who hails from Konkuk University Middle School and Jangchung High School, is an infield resource for right-handed hitting with above-average skills in all aspects. Since his nomination as the 50th overall in the second round of the fifth round in 2014, Park has posted a batting average of 0.262 (on-base plus slugging) of 18 homers, 311 RBIs and 160 steals (OPS) of 0.649 in 954 games.
Last year was an unforgettable time for Park. He played in 134 games with a batting average of 0.307 (158 hits in 515 times at bat), five homers, 61 RBIs, and 20 steals, contributing to Kia's V12. After the season, he faced the golden glove at shortstop for the first time since his debut.
Nevertheless, Park was not satisfied. He aimed to enter the OPS of 0.800 and sweated hard to increase his slugging percentage this offseason.
It was true, however, that he had anxiety recently. He only had one hit from nine times at bat in exhibition games before the match against the Changwon NC Dinos on Sunday.
Fortunately, the game on Sunday was different. He hit a left-center double in the top of the first inning, and even drew a three-run arch in the top of the second inning. The final result was two hits, one homer and three RBIs from three times at bat, which contributed to Kia's 17-10 victory.
"During the exhibition game, the balls I wanted keep coming out. I'm thinking positively," Park said after the game. "Even before the game on Wednesday, I didn't get a good hit. It's a sad situation if it's a season, but I think the direction of going as planned is coming out well as I practiced."
He added, "I am satisfied with all the batting and swing at bat. I think it is right that I felt that I could become a batter who can improve to the next level during last year's Korean Series."
The background of producing long balls may be a stronger body, but it is thanks to learning how to relax.
"I've gained some strength," he said. "I think the quality of the batting has improved as I've learned how to relax as the hitting point goes forward."
However, homeruns are not Park's goal. As mentioned earlier, entering the OPS of 0.800 is what he really wants to achieve this season.
"I have a goal to produce more long balls, but it doesn't have to be a home run," Park said, nodding, "(OPS 0.800) might be a little high to be a goal, but I think it's a number to become the most ideal player." Will Park be able to lead Kia by achieving his goal this year.
